USA Field Hockey: Futures

About the Futures Program

The Futures program is the Olympic Development division of the United States Field Hockey Association. The purpose of the Futures Program is to raise the level of field hockey throughout the United States.

Athletes will train in Futures Training Academies for seven, three-hour sessions and will have the opportunity to be selected to their Regional Team at the Regional Futures Tournament.  From the Regional Futures Tournament, Futures athletes have the opportunity to advance to higher levels of play through selection to elite teams at the National Futures Championship. Futures participants meet on scheduled off-season weekend dates at Huntington Beach High School or Moorpark College to receive coaching and skill development techniques. If any player is interested in participating in the USA Futures Program, they must email us at newportharborfieldhockey@gmail.com. The coaches will hold a trial at the end of October which involves some timed pulls and a dribbling set up. Athletes who participated in the 2015 Futures program last year must email us, but they do not need to register for a trial.

We have had a number of Newport Harbor Field Hockey players participate in the past and they have had positive experiences. Futures is a really great environment for a player to reach new levels in their field hockey skill and experience.

Goalie Training

Thanks to our Finish Strong campaign, all of our goalies had three training sessions with goalkeeper specialist, Jill Dedman. Jill was an All-American, Big East Goalkeeper of the Year (twice) at Boston College and was a goalkeeper on the US National Team from 2001- 2004, a member or the USA Indoor Team from 2005-2006, then on the outdoor team again from 2006-2008. Jill coached at the collegiate level for University at Albany, Indiana University, and University of California in Berkeley, CA. She now runs Blockstar Field Hockey and consults with collegiate and high school teams as a goalkeeper specialist. Thanks for the trainings, Jill!

And while we are on the subject of goalkeepers: Newport Harbor Field Hockey Alum Sydney King (Class of 2011) is a redshirt junior goalkeeper for the University of Louisville Division 1 Field Hockey Team. The No. 14 University of Louisville field hockey team had a huge 3-2 win over No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday. Great work, Syd!
