Recruiting Expert Presentation

You may have received an invitation through the school, but we just wanted to highlight it once again. In addition to the presentation, Paul has also offered to arrange a free evaluation for field hockey players with Coach Zowie Tucker, former field hockey coach at U-Mass, Amherst and Holy Cross, who is now a Head Scout at NCSA.

Nationally recognized speaker and college recruiting expert Paul Putnam from NCSA Athletic Recruiting will be presenting ‘College Recruiting Simplified’ on Monday, March 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Social Hall. The seminar is free to all students and their families.

Putnam will guide parents and student-athletes through the importance of establishing athletic and academic goals, setting realistic expectations and seeking opportunities at all college and division levels.

Topics covered include:

  • The benefits of playing college sports
  • Reading college coach communications between the lines
  • When the recruiting process starts
  • How to get discovered
  • How coaches evaluate prospects
  • How to set realistic expectations
  • High school and club coaches’ roles

Informational Recruiting Info Session

An Edison field hockey alum now plays at Goucher College in Maryland and her coach, Megan Williams, will be doing a ‘Recruiting 101’ informational session in Huntington Beach on Tuesday, November 24, 7:00 p.m. at the Edison Community Center. She will be talking about how to speak with college coaches, choosing a program that is right for you, the differences between divisions, and recruiting timelines.

Outside Summer Camps

We have received quite a few inquiries from players who are interested in attending a field hockey summer camp in addition to our Newport Harbor Field Hockey Summer Camp. Below is some information on a few field hockey camps held in California by different colleges and companies. Contact Coach Amanda Boyer if you are considering attending a camp that coincides with the Newport Harbor Field Hockey Summer Camp.

University of the Pacific Field Hockey Camp
Pacific field hockey will be having their annual field hockey camp this summer, July 18-19.  The camp will be hosted at Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista, CA.  The two day camp includes individual skills, small game play, and large game play.  This is an awesome opportunity for players to gain collegiate experience from collegiate players and coaches. The camp fee is $130, which includes a Longstreth camp pack, mesh jersey, lanyard, ball, pre-wrap, and drawstring backpack.

UC Davis Field Hockey Camp
At UC Davis Field Hockey Camps you will be trained by the highest caliber staff available, who combine for years of international and collegiate playing and coaching experience. You will also learn hockey skills and tactics as well as what it takes as an athlete to make that jump from high school to the college level physically, mentally, and nutritionally to become an all around student athlete.

Stanford University Nike Field Hockey Camp
The Stanford Field Hockey Camp is a co-ed camp for players age 12 to 18 and will focus on basic and advanced skills, position play, field hockey fundamentals and team strategy. Located on the beautiful Stanford campus in Palo Alto California, this high tempo skills camp provides technical teaching and “new” skill development, in a fun yet competitive environment. Participants will experience a combination of skill development and game play situations in an intensive format with multiple repetitions.

The University of San Diego Camp is a camp for players age 12 to18 and will focus on basic and advanced skills, position play, field hockey fundamentals and team strategy. This high tempo skills camp provides technical teaching and “new” skill development, in a fun yet competitive environment. Participants will experience a combination of skill development and game play situations in an intensive format with multiple repetition.

Revolution Field Hockey Camp
Field hockey campers get the chance to learn from and play with the top coaches and players in field hockey today. A typical field hockey camp involves skill sessions, scrimmages, positional training, athlete awareness, and free time with new friends. Overnight campers will get to experience dorm living and all campers are under staff supervision for the entire field hockey camp.

Virginia Wesleyan Coach

Huntington Beach Field Hockey invited all of the local field hockey teams to come hear Virginia Wesleyan Coach Joyce Anne Koubaroulis speak on the field hockey recruiting process, division 3 athletics on the east coast, and more specifically what VWC can offer a student-athlete.  The event will take place in the Career Center at HBHS on Tuesday, November 29th at 6:00 p.m. for anyone who is interested.

King to Louisville

It’s official! Senior Sydney King will be attending University of Louisville in Kentucky to play NCAA Division I Field Hockey for the Cardinals. Newport Harbor Field Hockey is excited to cheer you and your team on this fall, Sydney! We are so proud!

Cardinals Coach, Justine Sowry, said, “I am excited to introduce seven well-rounded, respected, and hard working young women to the 2011 Louisville Field Hockey roster. This incoming group is extremely balanced, athletic, and versatile. With the ability to play multiple positions on the field hockey pitch, these incoming freshmen will give the 2011 squad great depth and flexibility.”
