Spring Training – One Week Away

Newport Harbor Field Hockey Spring Training starts in one week!

Spring Training will be offered to all returning Newport Harbor Field Hockey players from May 9 – June 16: 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at Harper.

Those already participating in spring sports may use Field Hockey: Spring Training to complete their semester of PE credit.

We ask for a spring training contribution of $25 per student to help cover some costs. Players are to bring their running shoes, shin guards, stick, mouth guard, and water.

There will be field hockey regulated shin guards and goggles for players to try on so that they can determine their sizing, if needed. *Goggles will not be required at practice until the 2011 season begins in August.

Response to Eyewear Ruling

There has been a great deal of response to the recent mandate on protective eyewear for all high school field hockey players. The National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) has not responded to any of the statements against protective eyewear, or the models that are certified, as of yet.

To read the Executive Director of USA Field Hockey’s Weekly Report and stance on the ruling, click here.

Newport Harbor Field Hockey must follow whatever ruling is set by the NFHS.

New 2011-2012 Rule: Protective Eyewear

The National Federation of State High School Associations Board of Directors voted to mandate the use of protective eyewear for all 64,000 high school field hockey athletes in the US, effective this fall.

“While serious eye injuries in field hockey are rare, the NFHS Board of Directors has concluded that an eyewear requirement is the right step,” said Elliot Hopkins, NFHS director of educational services and field hockey rules editor.

The goggles that meet the current American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard for field hockey are the same that the lacrosse program currently uses at Newport Harbor High School. All returning players must have a pair of goggles at pre-season in August. We will have sample goggles for players to try-on at Spring Training in May, as well as information on where to purchase the goggles. We will encourage returning players to purchase goggles (navy or gray/silver) at that time due to the high demand across the country.
