Coach of the Year

Boyer Named NHHS Coach of the Year
Written by 2016-2017 Captain Jackie Singer

Coach Amanda Boyer was honored as the Newport Harbor High School Coach of the Year at the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce Athletic Awards Dinner on Thursday. Coach Boyer was celebrated because of her hard work and dedication to the field hockey program. During the past ten years of coaching field hockey, Amanda has positively influenced hundreds of Newport Harbor student athletes. This year, despite not having a home field,  Amanda was able to foster a “go with the flow” mentality that extended throughout the program. Busing to practices and games, Coach Boyer was able to make our ‘home’ games at Huntington Beach High School feel like home by bringing dirt in a jar from Davidson field. She worked hard to maintain a positive environment within the team and was able to coach this year’s team to victory in the Tournament of Champions! Not only is Coach Amanda Boyer able to get the league and TOC results her team is striving for, but more importantly she creates a warm, encouraging, and fun environment where the girls look forward to working hard and having fun after school. Coach Boyer challenges her players to push themselves to work at their personal best to not only bring up their own level of play but the team’s as well.  Coach Boyer leads by example. She is a role model for not only the field hockey girls, but all student athletes at Newport Harbor High School. Congratulations Coach Boyer!

Update on Sasha

Newport Harbor Field Hockey Alum and 2010-2011 JV Coach, Sasha Grumman, sent us an update on how she is doing in culinary school. Thanks Sash!

Sasha spent time in New York City earlier this year: “NYC is fun/exhausting…as you can imagine. School is going well. Pretty long days: 9:30 – 3:30 in the kitchen every day and then Italian language class for 2 hours almost every day. An example of a full course that we will do in a day is a salad with pancetta dressing and a poached egg, then potato gnocchi with a sage sauce, and then a roasted rack of lamb and artichokes. Everything is timed and they watch your every move, but it’s fun! Love the adrenaline rush. Italian is also going super well. Knowing Spanish has helped a lot. Overall, I am super happy with the experience and have been learning a lot. We’ve been able  to work with a wide range of ingredients; everything from octopus and cuttlefish to rabbits and quails. We’ve also broken down ducks and filleted all kinds of fish. While it’s fun here, I do miss you all and it’s always so great to hear from the field hockey family!”

Sasha is now in the second part of her program, which is in Italy: “Italy is absolutely amazing. So much more exciting than NYC, which I thought was impossible. The food is amazing, I’m meeting a lot of Italian students and speaking broken Italian and English. The school is beautiful and I have a great apartment! Things are going well!”

Sasha starts her internship next week at a restaurant called Da Caino in Tuscany. Good luck Sasha, keep in touch!

Rookie Coach of the Year

Congratulations to Head Coach Amanda Boyer for being named the 2011 recipient of the California Coaches Association Rookie Coach of the Year. The CCA gives Coach of the Year recognitions to each sport in the state of California, but only awards one Rookie Coach of the Year. This award gives much deserved recognition to Amanda’s coaching excellence and her professional contributions of time, service, and dedication to the profession and athletics.

After coaching at the Junior Varsity level for three years, this past season was Amanda’s first year as Head Varsity Coach. Amanda will be presented with a plaque at the 54th Annual CCA Awards Banquet, held on June 11 in Sacramento, CA.

Amanda attributes the success of this past year to the tremendous amount of support given by her husband, Jason Boyer; her family; her mentor, Devon Kelly; her Assistant Coach, Judy Schaefer; her amazing team; the NHHS Athletic Department; and the Newport Harbor Field Hockey Boosters, families and fans.
