Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey won the consolation bracket at the Otay Ranch Tournament after losing 0-4 to Cathedral Catholic on the turf field in the quarterfinals.

After a scoreless game against Bonita Vista, the Sailors won in the third round of sudden victory strokes with a shot by Alex Palmer. Goalkeeper Cailynn Smethurst made three saves during the strokes.

The Sailors beat Otay Ranch High School 1-0 with a goal by Caroline Gels, assisted by Sophie Templin.

Newport Harbor 2, Glendora 0

GLENDORA — Riley Flanagan scored two goals to help lead the Sailors to their nonleague road win Thursday.

Jordan Blanchfield and Emily Conant had one assist each.

Erika Nilsson had four saves in goal in the second half for Newport Harbor.

The Sailors play in the quarterfinals of the Otay Ranch Tournament on Saturday.

Newport Harbor Junior Varsity beat Glendora 4-0 with two goals by Ali Bonds, and one by Alex Vazquez and Riley Siegfried. Goalkeeper Callie Kennedy had three saves.

Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph traveled to Marina High School and won 2-0 with a power shot from the top of the circle in the last few minutes of the game by Sophie Schwarzenbach. The first goal was shot off by Schwarzenbach and tipped in by Katie Robinson at the post. Coach Taylor Cordeiro noted impressive play by Trudy Padden at the midfield.

On Monday, Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey defeated visiting defeated visiting Louisville HS of Woodland Hills 4-0. Head Coach Amanda Boyer was pleased with the Sailor’s balanced attack. Newport scored twice in the first half with Caroline Gels deflecting in a short corner shot by Alex Palmer. Sophie Templin added another goal on a short corner play. In the second half, Mia Bagiu sent the ball into the circle for an assist as Riley Flanagan shot for a goal. Jordan Blanchfield’s late goal secured the win from an assist by Flanagan.

Next up, Newport travels to Glendora on Thursday for more pre-season play.

On Monday, Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph hosted Edison High School’s Frosh/Soph team and ended in a 2-0 victory. The goals were scored by Grace Muenchow and Katie Robinson. Go Newport!

It was a busy Saturday for Newport Harbor Field Hockey!

ALLIED SPORTS DAY – WESTMINSTER HIGH SCHOOL
Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph played in the Allied Sports Day at Westminster High School in the JV bracket. The team beat Westminster 1-0 with a goal by Grace Muenchow, had a scoreless tie against Fountain Valley, lost 0-3 to Huntington Beach, and won 1-0 against Marina with a goal by Kendall Machado. Coach Taylor gave kudos to Maxine Aiello and Lauren Bibb for their defensive play, as well as the offensive play by Grace and Kendall.

OTAY RANCH VARSITY TOURNAMENT – CHULA VISTA, CA
Newport Harbor Junior Varsity played in a tough Varsity bracket at the Otay Ranch Tournament. The sailors tied their first game 0-0 against Bishops, and tied their second game 1-1 against El Capitan with a goal by Senny Fuller. Newport lost to Canyon Crest in their third game.

Newport Harbor Varsity ended Saturday undefeated and the bracket leader. In their first game against Mission Hills, they won 2-0 with a goal by Jordan Blanchfield, assist by Sophie Templin, and a goal by Riley Flanagan, assist by Caroline Gels. In the second game against Santana, the Sailors ended with another 2-0 win with goals by Templin and Alex Palmer. In the third game against Chula Vista, Newport won 8-0 with goals by Templin, Blanchfield, Gels, Palmer (2), Flanagan, Elizabeth Muenchow, and Noelle Hubbard. Newport Harbor Varsity will continue on to the finals round of the tournament this weekend.

Newport Harbor’s Girls Field Hockey Varsity team is off to a good start with a pre-season 4-1 win over visiting Bonita HS of La Verne on Tuesday. Newport, a perennial field hockey powerhouse, is looking to return to form following a disappointing early round exit in last year’s Tournament of Champions playoff.

Caroline Gels opened the scoring for Newport with the first of her two goals and the team were tied 1-1 at halftime. Newport’s defense held the visitors scoreless in the second half as Newport added goals by Jordan Blanchfield. Sophie Templin and Gels. Newport’s Coach, Amanda Boyer, also credited the win to solid defensive play from Jenna Nulty, Mia Bagiu and Allana Rockwell and goalies Cailynn Smethurst and Erika Nilsson, with three saves each.



Newport Harbor Junior Varsity defeated the Bearcats 3-0 with two goals by Ali Bonds and a goal by Hailey Martinez. Go Newport!


Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph traveled to Fountain Valley and played a dominant game that ended in a 0-1 loss. Coach Taylor said that she was proud of the team’s play.

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey traveled to Glendora for the first round of the Tournament of Champions playoffs. The Sailors fell 0-1, but answered back quickly with a goal by Kirsten Rohan. The game remained tied 1-1 through regulation time, as well as a 10-minute sudden victory over time. The game ended with penalty strokes where Glendora won. Coach Amanda Boyer noted that the team played well and should be proud of their season. On Wednesday, Glendora will face Huntington Beach and Edison will face Harvard Westlake in the semi-finals.

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey ended Sunset League play on Thursday with a win against Fountain Valley. The Sailors beat the Barons 4-0. Goals were scored by Anna Newman assisted by Sydney Dexter, Jill Messersmith had two goals with an assist by Sophie Templin, and Taury Hlinka scored a goal with the assist from Jill Messersmith. The Sailors placed third in league and will travel to Glendora High School on Monday for the first round of playoffs in the Tournament of Champions. Go Newport!

Newport Harbor JV Field Hockey beat the Barons 2-0 with both goals by Riley Flannagan with an assist by Alexa Luckow. JV Field Hockey ended the sunset league tied for 1st place. Well done girls!
