TOC Champions!

The Daily Pilot‘s report on last night:

Tars win TOC title again

HUNTINGTON BEACH — This time the Newport Harbor High field hockey team did not leave much drama in winning its third straight Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions title.

The Sailors handled rival Huntington Beach, 2-0, beating the Oilers for the third straight time in the championship match. Newport won after a penalty-stroke shootout in 2008 and last year the Tars scored a 1-0 victory in the final.

Thursday night was a different story, as senior Taylor Cordeiro scored in the first half off an assist from sophomore Jane Layton. Junior Sophie Evans netted the insurance goal {off an assist from senior Beth Barnard} in the second half for the Sailors, who shared the Sunset League title with the Oilers.

Newport Harbor Coach Amanda Boyer, a former player at the school, said her defense played outstanding with senior goalie Sydney King (nine saves) leading the way.

Senior Stephanie Storch shared tournament MVP honors with Brooke Berns of Huntington Beach.

King, senior Madeline Storch and junior Courtney McIntosh earned all-tournament honors.

“They were ecstatic but also sad for it to be over because they have such a strong bond,” Boyer said of her team. “They were able to beat Huntington physically and mentally. They played with complete heart and that’s what made them rise to the occasion, for the love of the game and for the love of each other.”

This was the first time Newport Harbor won TOC, Sunset League, Orange County tournament (shared with HB) and Highlander Cup (San Diego) titles since 2003 when Boyer played for the Sailors.
