Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph Field Hockey traveled to Edison on Friday and lost 0-1. Coach Liz Tennyson reported that the girls played a great, tough game.

It was a blazing hot Saturday in Chula Vista, CA for Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey at the Otay Ranch Field Hockey Tournament. The girls came in Second Place after a 0-2 loss to Canyon Crest in the final game. Newport beat El Capitan 1-0 in the quarter-finals with a goal by Alex Palmer, and won 2-0 in the semi-finals against Catholic Cathedral with goals by Taury Hlinka and Palmer. Congratulations on Second Place out of 17 teams Newport!

FIELD HOCKEY

Glendora 3, Newport Harbor 3

NEWPORT BEACH — Jill Messersmith scored two goals and had an assist for the Sailors in the nonleague game Monday.

Taury Hlinka scored a goal and Jordan Blanchfield had an assist for Newport Harbor.

Newport Harbor Junior Varsity Field Hockey beat Glendora 1-0 with the lone goal scored by Alexa Luckow.

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey played host to Chaminade on Monday and ended in a 3-0 win. Goals were scored by Taury Hlinka with an assist by Alex Palmer, Sophie Templin, and Sydney Dexter. Newport, with a record of 5-0-1, hosts Glendora on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor JV Field Hockey fell 0-1 to Chaminade.

Busy Weekend!

It’s been a very busy weekend for Newport Harbor Field Hockey!

The Parent Party was a huge success on Friday night. Thanks to all of the parents who were able to come and to the Booster Board for hosting such a wonderful event!

A big congratulations to JV Coach Kerrie Gates on her engagement on Friday night!

On Saturday, JV and Frosh/Soph were at the Allied Sports Play Day at Westminster High School. Frosh/Soph defeated Fountain Valley 1-0 with a goal by Ali Bonds, tied 0-0 and lost 0-1 to Huntington Beach teams, and beat Westminster 3-0 with two goals by Claire McCarthy and one by Bonds. Go Newport!

JV had a scoreless tie with Huntington Beach, a 3-0 win over Fountain Valley with two goals by Riley Flanagan and one by Gabriella Parisi, and a 1-1 tie with Bonita, goal scored by Julia Frei.

Varsity traveled to Chula Vista to compete in the first round of the Otay Ranch Tournament and placed first in their pool. They beat El Capitan 3-2 with goals by Alex Palmer, Jill Messersmith, and Jordan Blanchfield with an assist by Caroline Gels. Varsity then faced Mira Mesa and won 5-0; goals were scored by Blanchfield off an assist by Palmer, Anna Newman, Taury Hlinka with another assist by Palmer, and two goals by Caroline Gels. In the last game of the day, they defeated Eastlake 5-0 with three goals by Hlinka and one by Sophie Templin and Anna Newman with an assist by Templin. Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey will return to the tournament next weekend to compete in the Quarterfinals.

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey traveled to Bonita High School on Thursday and defeated the Bearcats 2-1. After falling 0-1 in the first half, junior Alex Palmer scored a goal off a shot by senior captain Kirsten Rohan. The Tars then went ahead 2-1 after a goal by senior captain Sydney Dexter with an assist by senior Taury Hlinka. Junior goalkeeper Cailynn Smethurst had five saves.

High School Roundup: Newport Harbor opens season with tie
Smethurst leads defense with four saves, as Sailors’ field hockey team settles for scoreless tie against Harvard Westlake.

The Newport Harbor High field hockey team began its quest for a fifth straight season-ending championship with a scoreless tie against Harvard Westlake Tuesday at Davidson field.

The action went back and forth, but both defenses and goalies held strong throughout the game.

Harvard Westlake had four shots on goal, while the Sailors had three shots on goal.

Cailynn Smethurst had a great game in goal and made four strong saves, said Newport Harbor Coach Amanday Boyer, whose Sailors have won four straight Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions titles. Midfielders Jill Messersmith and Jordan Blanchfield played well, while Jane Layton, Hannah Vigil and Alex Salai made key contributions on defense, Boyer said.

“The team had a really strong game,” Boyer said. “We have some things to work on but overall it was a game they should be proud to kick off their season with.”

The Sailors play at Bonita Thursday.


Junior Varsity fell to Harvard Westlake 1-3 with a goal by Elizabeth Muenchow. Frosh/Soph traveled to Marina High School and won 1-0 with a goal by Jessica Stone.

Newport Harbor Field Hockey traveled to Glendora for the Tournament of Champions Semi-Final game and won 2-1. Senior Madison Wooters scored a goal and junior Jill Messersmith scored one with an assist by Kirsten Rohan. Senior Kellie Conant was amazing in defense against Glendora.
