Club Tryouts

If you are interested in playing competitive field hockey throughout the year and increasing your skill level, we highly recommend that you tryout for club field hockey.

The club that Newport Harbor Field Hockey recommends is Mulligan, run by Assistant Varsity Coach Judy Schaefer and the Umpire Assigner for our league, Debbie Custer. Their club is a visionary Field Hockey Academy designed to cultivate all levels of hockey.  Their mission is to provide athletes who have ability, desire and commitment to play at the highest level. Their designed method is to improve all athletes’ technical and tactical ability. They develop grade school, middle school and high school levels through the ‘Divots’ teams while their ‘Mulligan’ team program focuses on college level and adult elite club. Mulligan Field Hockey Academy offers a multitude of programs consisting of select travel teams, league play, development clinics, private lessons and summer camps.

The upcoming tryout is for team placement in the club as well as for spots on the team to National Festival. The National Festival is the largest college recruiting showcase in the country. It will be in Phoenix, AZ on Nov. 25, 26 and 27, 2010. Practice times for the team will be on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. until the second week of November when additional practices will be announced.

The official tryout for Mulligan club will be held on Saturday, but due to our players’ conflict with the car wash fundraiser, the club will be holding a makeup tryout for us. The date and time will be announced at a later time, but if you are interested, you must register by Saturday and check the box, ‘unable to come’, indicating that you will attend the makeup tryout. Click here to Register.

Club members train together throughout the year and compete at local and national tournaments including Disney Showcase and the California Cup. Players will be responsible for all additional costs associated with tournament play and travel including but not limited to field and coach costs.

Almost all of our alumni players who continued their field hockey careers into college played for Mulligan Club Field Hockey. It is a great experience and a guaranteed way to improve your hockey. For any additional information email judy@MulliganFieldHockey.com or call Debbie Custer 714.655.4131.

A Note from Grupe

Newport Harbor Field Hockey’s recent graduate, Lauren Grupe, sent us a note about her time so far at University of the Pacific.

“Hello! Just wanted to give a shout out to all my Sailor field hockey girls! Congratulations on your recent win! Keep up the great work! UOP has been an incredible experience so far. The field hockey team has become my family. We are together pretty much all the time and I love everyone. Whether we are having a team dinner or simply just practicing, we are always bonding and having the best time. College hockey is very time consuming and tons of hard work but its worth it because I love the sport. Playing Division I field hockey has been a great opportunity, and I strongly recommend playing at the college level to anyone who has a true passion for the sport. Good luck with your season and I wish the best to all of you!”
Thanks Lauren, we wish the best to you and are so glad to hear about how well your season is going!

Play Day Times

This Saturday JV & Frosh/Soph will be participating in the Westminster High School Field Hockey Play Day. JV will be playing in the Varsity bracket and Frosh/Soph will be participating in the JV bracket. Some Varsity players will be present as they help officiate throughout the day. Games are 25 minutes in length with no breaks. The time is kept at a central location for all of the fields and dictated by an air horn. Teams have five minutes to get on and off of the field.

Players need to bring both color uniforms and socks. We will bring our new EZ-ups to provide shade and a resting place for the teams. The girls generally bring snacks to munch on throughout the day as they wait in-between games. Good luck girls!
