All League Recognition

Thank you to the Daily Pilot for recognizing our Sunset League All-League players!

McIntosh earns league’s top defensive honor

Senior among Newport Harbor players who come away with All-Sunset League laurels during championship season.

Newport Harbor High senior field hockey player Courtney McIntosh has been named the Sunset League’s Most Valuable Defensive Player, in voting by league coaches.

McIntosh was joined on the all-league first team by Sailors teammates Sophie Evans, Emmy Mitchell and Nicole Zielinski.

McIntosh, a three-year varsity player, was an integral piece on defense and in the midfield for Coach Amanda Boyer’s Sailors. She helped Newport Harbor (20-4-2) finish second in the Sunset League south division before going on to win its fourth straight Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions title over rival Huntington Beach.

She was named to the TOC all-tournament team along with Jill Messersmith, with Evans as the tournament MVP.

Newport Harbor’s Messersmith, Taury Hlinka and Allie Pantosky earned second-team All-Sunset League status.

Huntington Beach’s Lindsay Walter was named league MVP, with the Oilers’ Kayla Wigney as the league’s Most Valuable Offensive Player. Alexis Coco of Edison earned the Most Valuable Midfielder honors, while Felicia Almeida of Marina was named Most Valuable Goalie.

Off-Season Reminders

Just a few reminders for the players enrolled in off-season field hockey:

– Today (Monday, December 7) we are meeting in the library at 2 p.m. to take the athletic survey. We will have regular practice afterward.
– If you haven’t brought your contribution yet, please do so today.
– Any absence in Off-Season must be called in to the attendance office and excused or it will be marked as a truancy. Off-season field hockey is a class for PE credit and since we only meet twice a week, attendance is very important for each player’s grade.

Goal Dismantle – Help!

We hope that everyone had a nice Thanksgiving holiday! The Newport Harbor Field Hockey players, coaches and alumni, who traveled to Arizona with Mulligan Field Hockey for the National Field Hockey Festival, had a fun time and played in some great games.

This email is a plea for some volunteers to help take down the field hockey goals at Harper Field so that we can store them for the winter. Jeff Chandler will be at Harper Field at 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, December 3.  If there are four or more people available to help, this can take less than an hour. It would be best if we could have some dads of freshman, sophomore, or junior players volunteer so that we can get an understanding of how to do this again next winter. Please confirm with Jeff if you can make it, his email is jdchandler@att.net. Thank you in advance for your help – this will keep our goals in good condition!

Post Season Start

Post Season Field Hockey begins tomorrow (Monday) at 2:00 p.m. Meet at NHHS on the field between the softball and baseball fields. Please bring your $30 contribution as well as running shoes, shin guards, mouth guard, goggles, field hockey stick, and water. See you tomorrow!

Virginia Wesleyan Coach

Huntington Beach Field Hockey invited all of the local field hockey teams to come hear Virginia Wesleyan Coach Joyce Anne Koubaroulis speak on the field hockey recruiting process, division 3 athletics on the east coast, and more specifically what VWC can offer a student-athlete.  The event will take place in the Career Center at HBHS on Tuesday, November 29th at 6:00 p.m. for anyone who is interested.
