Pyle Donation

At a NHHS Educational Foundation gathering last Friday, David Pyle, a Newport Harbor Field Hockey parent, donated $610,000 to the Newport Harbor Educational Foundation and specifically designated the Newport Harbor Field Hockey program to receive $100,000 of the money (see the Daily Pilot article here and the NB Independent article here). Mr. Pyle acknowledged Head Coach Amanda Boyer’s leadership, specifically citing her work in developing the program and players. Amanda and the Newport Harbor Administration are extremely grateful for Mr. Pyle’s generous donation and for his commitment to enhancing the Newport Harbor Field Hockey Program.

Mr. Pyle’s wishes are for the grant to be used to ensure continuity and enhancement in the program, as well as to be leveraged for fundraising. The grant is subject to mutually agreed distribution terms between David and the leadership of Newport Harbor Field Hockey over no less than five years. This grant is intended to be a supplement, not a substitution, to fundraising and will most likely be used as a matching gift challenge each year as new avenues for growth and development are discovered. Mr. Pyle, Amanda, and the Booster Board will be meeting to establish disbursement criteria, program milestones and fundraising activity schedules in accordance with Mr. Pyle’s wishes and terms of his generous donation.

The Newport Harbor Field Hockey program owes much of its success to the many ways that the NHHS Field Hockey community shows its support. One of the goals of the Newport Harbor Field Hockey program is to continue to develop student athletes into strong citizens, who strive for victory with honor and character.  At Friday night’s presentation, Mr. Pyle quoted legendary basketball coach John Wooden, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.”

Thank you again to David Pyle for your generous and enduring support. Go Newport!

A Message from the President

Welcome NHHS Girls Field Hockey Parents and Boosters,

It is that time again! Spring training begins on Monday.  How quickly the 2012 Girls’ Field Hockey Season will be upon us.  Very exciting activities moving into the new season.  As the new Booster President,  I have some large shoes to fill with the legendary former Booster President, Jeff Chandler’s retirement.

For those Parents and Daughters who will be joining the Field Hockey family for the first time, you are in store for much fun and excitement.  For those veterans who will be returning, we look forward to another successful and memorable season.  All of our outstanding coaches will be back with us this year,  so we look forward to “Finishing Strong” in 2012.

It is through your generosity of time and contributions that helps us keep the Girls Field Hockey program as one of the premier sports activities at Newport Harbor High.  Please check the ‘Parents’ section of the website for different ways that you can volunteer or contribute, and to see some important dates to already be saving for the fall.

Jim Palmer has graciously joined the Board to handle all Field Operations.  If anyone is interested in helping with the fields during the season, please let me know.

Lastly, two of our key Board members will be retiring this year after multiple years of service.  We are indebted to their service and contributions.

Both Kathy Hancock, who has served as our Secretary, and Nancy Rohan as the Treasurer for the past 2 years, have done an incredible job as valuable Board Members.  If you are interested in joining the Girls Field Hockey Board as Secretary or Treasurer, please let us know.  We will arrange to have you shadow them during the season to ensure a smooth transition.  The heavy lifting has already been done because both of these ladies are incredibly organized and experienced.

That is it for now.  More to come as the season approaches.  We look forward to your participation and a fantastic experience for your daughters.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

John Nulty

A Message from Jeff

On behalf of the NHHS Field Hockey Boosters, I would like to welcome everyone to the 2011 hockey season. The FH Board and Head Coach Amanda Boyer have been meeting and planning over the off-season to make this year another memorable one for the girls. We have kept many of the Harbor traditions in place while trying to improve the program from the smallest details that may not be noticed by all to ones that everyone will see. The biggest change this season is our girls will be playing most of their home games at Davidson Field on the NHHS campus. This has been a long time coming but we finally can generate that field hockey excitement on campus so more students can
see our girls play this great game. We will enhance the stadium a bit so it has some field hockey feel for the girls and the spectators. Another new element this year is our expanded presence in San Diego tournaments. The varsity will be moving over to the Otay-Ranch tournament after winning the Helix Highlander Cup tournament two years in a row. The JV will be present at the Helix JV tournament as well as the F/S team. San Diego is a hot bed of high school field hockey with over 35 schools with programs. The competition is tough but Newport has held its own in the past and is set to play hard again this year.

Each season presents various challenges but one that is always present is generating enough funds for the program so we can continue the high level of excellence from the coaching in the summer and fall to the team building events, attending various tournaments, plus the annual equipment and uniform upgrades. This all takes funds and we look to you parents and the community to help the program achieve its financial goals. We are establishing only two fund raising events this season. One is our second annual car wash at St. Andrews and the other is our “Finish Strong” campaign headed by John Nulty, our VP. This program was launched at the Parent Meeting and will stay
active throughout the early part of the season.

Lastly I want to thank the NHHS FH Board for all their efforts heading into this season. Nancy Rohan, our treasurer, has our financials so organized even I can understand the balance sheet. New to the board this year is Kathy Hancock, our secretary, and John Nulty,
our VP. Kathy has hit the ground running taking over from Kathy Liotta and John has just rolled up his fund raising sleeves this summer to get us on track. Thank you all!

Please feel free to contact any of us with questions about whom, what, where and why details about the program for the upcoming season. Our contact information, like a lot of other great info, is on the NHHS FH website.

Go Newport!

Boosters: A Look to Next Season

To all NHHS Field Hockey Parents and Friends,

The 2010 season is over and it is hard to believe how quickly each season goes by!  No question the success of the teams and the joy our girls get from this sport helps things move along from the beginning of summer to the end of fall.  As President of the NHHS FH Booster Club I already have thoughts geared towards 2011.  One of those is filling various positions on committees and on the board.  Even though some of the positions may be filled by returning parents, I do not want to assume everyone will be back ready to go another year.  I hope so!!! But I realize everyone’s time is valuable and each year presents new challenges for all.  So please take some time to think it over and if you are willing to re-up from last year, great!  If you were on the sidelines in the past and want to be more involved going forward, that would be fantastic too!

The booster club board’s goal every year is to make sure we can provide the girls and the coaching staff with the best environment possible to succeed on the field and to have fun along the way.   We welcome new ideas but also want to preserve the traditions that have become a staple for this program.  Bringing new parents to the board and on committees is key to keep the field hockey energy going each year.  I have listed below all the positions but I do want to focus on two that I know are open on the board.  Secretary and VP.  We have added the VP position for next year to learn all the ins and outs of the program so that person will be ready for the following season to fill any open board positions or help coordinate some of the committees.  As our program grows so does our need for more help on the board as well as the committees.

VP                            Secretary                 Banquet Head      Parent Party Cord.

Parent Party Host       Car Wash                Uniforms               Merchandise Sales

Photography              Team Moms            Fields                     Alumni Game Cord.

If you have any questions about any of these positions please feel free to contact me, Nancy Rohan or Amanda Boyer.

In closing I want to send out a special thanks to Marlon and Kathy Liotta.  Their daughter Taylor is a senior and off they go to plenty of free time next year because they have given sooooo much of it the past 4 years.  Marlon took a zillion photos each year at almost every game and helped out with numerous things from painting to barbequing.  Kathy has been the go to person since she knew all the records and has been the glue in keeping all of us informed year round.  Any words I write cannot truly describe the effort they have given NHHS Field Hockey. Thank You Liottas!!!!!!!!

Go Sailors!
