Mulligan Field Hockey

Interested in playing more field hockey? Looking to improve your skills and expose yourself to elevated levels of play? Join the Mulligan Field Hockey Club for over 80 hours of training/extended playing opportunities!!

Founded by assistant Varsity Coach Judy Schaefer in 2008, Mulligan Field Hockey caters to high school athletes from the Orange County area who are looking to improve their level of hockey through extended practice and high level competition.  Ranked the #1 field hockey club in the LA/OC Region by USA Field Hockey, Mulligan has helped propel 20 athletes from our area to play field hockey at the collegiate level, 8 of those being Newport Harbor Field Hockey Alums.

Our specialized training curriculum focuses on expanding individual skill sets while exposing players to the advanced tactical strategies of club/showcase competition. The $655 club tuition covers 6 months of training, practice/game uniforms, and tournament fees for The International Cal Cup Tournament in Moorpark California over Memorial Day weekend. Further tournament and Spring league opportunities will be announced during the Winter/Spring club season for under 14, Under 16, and Under 19 divisions. Coaches will hold trials during October/November (exact date/time TBA) as the high school season comes to a close.

Please contact info@mulliganfieldhockey.com to join or visit mulliganfieldhockey.com for more info. Our goal at Mulligan is to assist high school players who are seeking to become more dominant in their high school careers, looking to play beyond the short Fall season, or hoping to pursue hockey at the highest of collegiate/international levels.

Play for the Cure

Tuesday’s games were dedicated to ‘Play for the Cure’ and it was a huge success! There was a lot of pink to go around from their socks, to the ribbons, and even to the umpires and game ball! The Bake Sale raised more than double what we brought in last year for a total of $430!

Thank you to Marena Padden, Karen Warmington, Sheree Carter, Raylene Groves, and Barbara Lucore for making it such a great day with all of your organization and ethusiasm. Thank you to the NHHS Administration for making it the ‘Game of the Week’ and for grilling hot dogs for all of the fans. And thank you to Sue Dewan for making ribbons for all of the girls.

Game Recap

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey (10-1-1, 2-0-1 in league) hosted Edison High School on Tuesday and had a hard fought game. The game remained scoreless after regulation time and after ten minutes of sudden-victory 7 v 7 play, the result was a tie. Goalkeeper Sarah Sheldon had 5 saves in the cage. The Sailors travel to Marina High School on Thursday to complete the first half of league play.

Newport Harbor Junior Varsity Field Hockey fell 0-3 to the Edison Chargers.

Newport Harobr Frosh/Soph Field Hockey dominated their entire game, only allowing the ball on their defensive half three times with no shots on goal. Natalie Williams, Grace Fay, Olivia Kalatschan, and Maddie Baldikoski held the team together in the midfield. Mia Lucore scored two goals at forward to secure a 2-0 win over the Chargers. Go Newport!

Recent Alum at UVA

Newport Harbor Field Hockey Alum, Jordan Blanchfield (Class of 2015), checked in with us about her experience with club field hockey so far at the University of Virginia:

“I am having an awesome experience with club field hockey so far! I am so happy with the level of play and commitment expected on the team because it’s been a perfect balance with school. We practice late at night, three times a week and our games/tournaments are on weekends. The club is run entirely by students so there aren’t any coaches or faculty involved, but there is an “executive board” who is just made up of older girls that are mostly in charge. Club sports are definitely popular here. It’s such a big school that there are always people who want to keep playing their sport at a competitive level, so it’s fun to have a community of club sport athletes. I’ve met so many older girls that are awesome resources and super welcoming and helpful with anything at UVA so it makes being part of a team that much better!! I am so happy that I am still playing field hockey and I do also miss Newport Harbor Field Hockey a ton!! Go Newport!”

We wish Jordan all the best at UVA and are so proud of her accomplishments already. Jordan’s team is undefeated and she has already scored three goals and has two assists.

Thank You Nike!

The Nike Store at Fashion Island hosted the Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey team for a Nike Training Club workout and they had a blast! The team worked hard, sweat a lot, and had smiles for most of the workout. A big thank you to Nike, our trainer, Joni, and to Newport Harbor Field Hockey Alum, Mary Yeager!
