Summer Camp at UC Berkeley

Last summer a number of players traveled to Stanford University to participate in the Stanford Field Hockey Summer Camp. This year, we are planning to send a group to University of California, Berkeley for their camp on July 7 – 10.

The Field Hockey Camp at UC Berkeley provides a wonderful chance for you to visit California and see what the area has to offer while participating in a great camp designed to help you reach the next level. Players of all ability levels ages 10-18 are welcome to attend. Cal’s coaching staff and current players help you develop your basic skills as well as teach you the latest skills and tactics to allow you to compete at the highest level. Participants stay in the dorms and eat meals together on campus at UC Berkeley.

The Newport Harbor Field Hockey Boosters is working out a way to help lower the cost of the camp; the amount discounted will depend on how high the interest level is. Please email newportharborfieldhockey@gmail.com if you are interested and able to commit to that time frame. For more information on the camp, click here.

Recruiting Expert Presentation

You may have received an invitation through the school, but we just wanted to highlight it once again. In addition to the presentation, Paul has also offered to arrange a free evaluation for field hockey players with Coach Zowie Tucker, former field hockey coach at U-Mass, Amherst and Holy Cross, who is now a Head Scout at NCSA.

Nationally recognized speaker and college recruiting expert Paul Putnam from NCSA Athletic Recruiting will be presenting ‘College Recruiting Simplified’ on Monday, March 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Social Hall. The seminar is free to all students and their families.

Putnam will guide parents and student-athletes through the importance of establishing athletic and academic goals, setting realistic expectations and seeking opportunities at all college and division levels.

Topics covered include:

  • The benefits of playing college sports
  • Reading college coach communications between the lines
  • When the recruiting process starts
  • How to get discovered
  • How coaches evaluate prospects
  • How to set realistic expectations
  • High school and club coaches’ roles
