Donate Blood

It has been an especially tough summer for one Newport Harbor Field Hockey family. On June 8, an alum parent, Julie Wolfe – mom to Zoie Wolfe (Class of 2010), was diagnosed with Luekemia. Julie is an avid Newport Harbor Field Hockey fan and gave so much to the program. We found out that there is a big need for people to donate blood. Unfortunately we cannot hold a blood drive because in order for the blood donation to go directly to Julie, they must be done at Hoag Hospital. SO we are inviting everyone to donate blood at Hoag.

If you are interested in donating, please call Hoag Blood Donor Services at 949.764.5621 to schedule an appointment. The Blood Donor Center is at 510 Superior Avenue, Suite 130. For a list of frequently asked questions about blood donation, click here. Julie specifically needs O-positive or O-negative blood, but any other blood types will be donated to the blood bank in her name. We appreciate any help with this, so if you know anyone else who would be interested in donating, please forward them this information.

Julie has been through two rounds of chemotherapy and has now returned home to enjoy summer until she begins the next stage of treatment. To stay connected, or to learn more about Julie, click here for her Caring Bridge webpage.

2012/2013 Teams Posted

The 2012-2013 Newport Harbor Field Hockey Teams and information has been posted to the Teams Page.

“Thank you to all who participated in the summer camp and tryouts. The Varsity team has won the Tournament of Champions (equivalent to CIF) four years consecutively, which has made the Newport Harbor Field Hockey program very competitive and there are only a limited number of spots between our three teams. The coaching staff and I had to make some difficult decisions as we considered each athlete’s skill, speed, stamina, strength, progression, coach-ability, work ethic, attitude, and 4-year potential. While we look forward to the 2012-2013 season, we regret having to cut any player and recognize the dedication and commitment that she has shown by participating in the summer camp. We hope that this disappointment does not stop athletes from pursuing the many other activities and programs offered at Newport Harbor High School. We also invite those who did not get placed onto a team to tryout next year. If you have any questions or would like an assessment of current strengths and areas for improvement, please feel free to contact me at amandamboyer@gmail.com.
Thank you again for your participation and understanding,

Amanda Boyer”

Opportunities for Practice

Huntington Beach High School’s new turf field has been completed and they are opening it up for the entire league to offer two different opportunities to practice:

  • Open Summer Sessions – This has already started, but any player can attend on a Tuesday evening through July 17. Each session is $10 for an hour and a half of game play. Click here for registration and more information.
  • HBHS Open Tournament – The Sunset League is holding a training for our umpires and then a tournament for them to practice at HBHS. We are encouraging players to register as an individual for this tournament to get practice with other players, as well as to help the effort for training umpires. The tournament is on Saturday, July 21 – the weekend before tryouts – from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Click here for more registration and more information. Registration is due by July 6.

These are great opportunities to gain more experience and play field hockey from other players in our league. We highly recommend participation!
