Game Recap

Newport Harbor’s Girls Field Hockey Varsity team is off to a good start with a pre-season 4-1 win over visiting Bonita HS of La Verne on Tuesday. Newport, a perennial field hockey powerhouse, is looking to return to form following a disappointing early round exit in last year’s Tournament of Champions playoff.

Caroline Gels opened the scoring for Newport with the first of her two goals and the team were tied 1-1 at halftime. Newport’s defense held the visitors scoreless in the second half as Newport added goals by Jordan Blanchfield. Sophie Templin and Gels. Newport’s Coach, Amanda Boyer, also credited the win to solid defensive play from Jenna Nulty, Mia Bagiu and Allana Rockwell and goalies Cailynn Smethurst and Erika Nilsson, with three saves each.

Newport Harbor Junior Varsity defeated the Bearcats 3-0 with two goals by Ali Bonds and a goal by Hailey Martinez. Go Newport!

Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph traveled to Fountain Valley and played a dominant game that ended in a 0-1 loss. Coach Taylor said that she was proud of the team’s play.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY COACH KERRIE! JV celebrated Kerrie’s birthday on Tuesday!

A Letter from the President

On behalf of the NHHS Field Hockey Boosters, I would like to welcome everyone to the 2013 hockey season. The FH Booster Board and Head Coach Amanda Boyer have been meeting and planning over the off-season to make this year another memorable one for the girls.

Our Varsity and JV will be playing their home games at Davidson Field on the NHHS campus. This will be the third year in a row that we will be playing our home games at Davidson Field, so we can continue to generate field hockey excitement on campus, with more students able to see our girls play this great game.

This year’s schedule is on the website under “Schedule”. All three teams will be participating in San Diego tournaments again. We will be returning to San Diego for more competition and variety of play, so it should be an exciting part of the year.

We are proud to announce that Taylor Cordeiro is the new Frosh/Soph coach. She is an alumni of NHHS and we are very excited to have her on our coaching staff this year. Our JV Coach, Kerrie is now ‘Kerrie Rowe’ since she got married in May…..so congratulations to Kerrie.  As many of  you know, Amanda Boyer, our Head Coach, had an addition to her family with the birth of her son, Jayden last year.  Amanda and her husband are expecting Baby Boyer #2 and are due in December, so we appreciate Amanda’s timing and waiting to have their next addition to the Boyer family after the season ends.

Key dates to note are:

  • Parents Meeting – Monday, August 26 at 6:30 PM at St. Andrew’s in the Student Center
  • Parents Party – Friday, September 6……location TBD
  • Car Wash Fundraiser – Saturday, September 21 at St. Andrew’s Parking Lot from 8:00-12:30PM

As usual your support and participation in these events is what helps the program remain so successful.  We always need volunteers for various roles in these events, including team dinners, game days, etc. so whatever time you can donate to assist and support the team and program is much needed and greatly appreciated.

Each season presents various challenges, but one that is always present is generating enough funds for the program, so we can continue the high level of excellence provided by our coaches during the summer and fall for the team building events, attending various tournaments, plus the annual equipment and uniform upgrades. An exciting development has been the generosity of David Pyle, whose daughters graduated from the program 2 years ago and in 2010. David has made a significant donation to the Girls NHHS Field Hockey program with a $100,000 commitment over the next five years.  David Pyle’s significant donation is intended to be a matching program, so every dollar that we raise this year will be matched by his endowment.

This means that the funds that you donate as parents will be matched by David’s endowment, helping the program meet its financial goals and allowing us to take the program to another level of excellence. We are holding only two fund raising events this season. One is our annual car wash at St. Andrews and the other is our “Finish Strong” campaign.  Please contact me if you are interested in joining our campaign and/or making a donation.  More information regarding our fund raising campaign and how you can participate will be provided at the Parent Meeting and remain active throughout the season.

I want to thank the NHHS FH Board for all their efforts heading into this season. Sara Muenchow is out new treasurer with Nancy Rohan’s retirement, and has our financials so organized that she makes all of our jobs easy.  Jennifer Blanchfield will be taking over the Secretary duties with Kathy Hancock’s retirement and will be responsible for helping us organize our many events throughout the year, Jen has stepped right in without missing a beat.  Jim Palmer, returns to the Board for his final year as Field Coordinator.  It takes a tremendous effort to make sure our fields are in tip top shape and marked properly to make it enjoyable for our girls to play.  Jim does a tremendous job and is always looking for parents who would be willing to volunteer their time and assistance.

As this year’s Board President and in charge of fundraising, I look forward to continuing the excellence of this program. Our girls truly take pride in continuing the traditions of one of the most successful programs at NHHS.  We will continue to try to live up to the excellence of this program, so we can continue to “Finish Strong.”  The girls and coaching staff work very hard, have tremendous passion for the sport, and have a lot of fun.  The rewards and memories for our daughters is something they will carry with them for a lifetime.  This is evident by the incredible participation and enthusiasm generated by our annual Alumni game, which took place with a great turnout about a month ago.

Lastly, I want to thank all of you parents who give so generously of your time, support, and financial contributions.  The continued excellence of this program starts with your generosity and commitment to your daughters and the program’s success!

Please feel free to contact any of us with questions about whom, what, where and why details regarding the program for the upcoming season. Our contact information, like a lot of other great info, is on the NHHS FH website.

We look forward to another great season……Go Newport!
