Game Recap

Newport Harbor Varsity and Junior Varsity Field Hockey competed at the OC Varsity Field Hockey Tournament yesterday and represented Newport well. JV competed very well at the Varsity level with 2 wins and 2 loses – Westminster 1-0 in strokes, HB 0-3, Fountain Valley 2-0, Marina 0-1 in strokes. JV competes in the OC JV Field Hockey tournament next weekend along with the Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph team.

After three years of receiving second place in the OC Tournament, the Varsity team brought home the championship for the first time since 2006. While Varsity Coach Amanda Boyer was in Santa Barbara fulfilling duties as a bridesmaid in a close friend’s wedding, Assistant Coach Judy Schaefer led the girls to victory and noted that they “won with class and grace”. The Daily Pilot reported on Varsity’s day:

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor defeated rival Huntington Beach in the championship game, but shared the title with the Oilers, due to both teams having one loss in the double-elimination event Saturday at Marina High.

The Sailors and Oilers were knotted at 0-0 in regulation, then finished tied, 1-1, through one round of five penalty strokes.

The Sailors then prevailed in sudden-death strokes, when senior Stephanie Storch converted.

Newport Harbor junior center back Courtney McIntosh, who had a penalty stroke goal in regulation of the title game, was named Tournament MVP.

Sailors senior Sydney King was Most Valuable Goalie in the one-day event in which the Tars went 4-1.

Newport Harbor defeated Bonita, 1-0, in strokes, topped Marina, 4-0, lost to Huntington Beach in strokes, 1-0 (after both teams failed to score in regulation), and beat Glendora, 1-0.

Stephanie and Madeline Storch, as well as senior Taylor Cordiero, were also named to the all-tournament team.
