Game Recap

The Newport Harbor High Varsity field hockey team opened their season with a 2-1 win against Harvard Westlake Tuesday at Davidson field.

Senior captain Caroline Gels scored the first goal seventeen minutes into the first half. Senior captain Jordan Blanchfield scored the second goal in the seventh minute of the second half. Senior goalkeeper Erika Nilsson had four saves.

Newport Harbor Junior Varsity shut out Harvard Westlake with a 4-0 win. Sophomore Georgia Yokoyama had a ‘hat trick’ with three goals and junior Emily Lukosky added another goal to secure the win.

Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph traveled to Marina High School and won 2-0 with the first goal scored by Sophia Mendoza, assisted by Tristen Warmington, and the second goal scored by Tristen Warmington, assisted by Leah Pallares.

The Newport Harbor High field hockey team took third place in the Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions after winning by forfeit against Westminster Saturday.

Westminster showed up two hours late to the scheduled third-place game at Moorpark College and Newport Harbor won by forfeit because the teams could not play due to the championship game’s start time, Newport Harbor Coach Amanda Boyer said.

“It was very disappointing, but the girls earned their spot to be there after the hard-fought semifinal game.”

The Sailors (20-7) lost in sudden-death overtime, 1-0, when Harvard-Westlake scored with 10 seconds left in the semifinals.

Newport Harbor’s Jordan Blanchfield, Cailynn Smethurst, Alex Palmer and Mia Bagiu earned all-tournament team honors.

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey (19-6) hosted Bonita for the Tournament of Champions Quarterfinals on Monday. Bonita scored an early goal, but Newport responded back quickly with a goal by Jordan Blanchfield to tie it up 1-1. After battling for the remainder of regulation time, the score remained 1-1 and the game went to 7 v 7 sudden victory 10 minute overtime. In the second minute of overtime Cameron Dewan passed the ball to Alex Palmer and Newport won the game 2-1. Go Newport!

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey traveled to Edison High School and lost 0-4 to the Chargers. The Sailors begin the first round of the LAFHA Tournament of Champions on Monday against Bonita High School at Davidson Field.

Newport Harbor JV Field Hockey lost 2-3 in a hard fought battle against Edison High School.

Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph traveled to Harvard Westlake and had a great 2-1 victory! Go Newport!

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey had a terrific senior day on Tuesday! We were able to celebrate the senior class of 2014 with a nice presentation and a big win against Huntington Beach!

Newport Harbor 1, Huntington Beach 0

Senior Elizabeth Muenchow scored the game-winner for the Sailors in the Sunset League game at Davidson Field Tuesday.

Junior captain Jordan Blanchfield assisted on the goal.

Senior goalkeeper Cailynn Smethurst had one save for Newport Harbor (7-2 in league), which finished second in the Sunset League.

Sophie Templin, Allana Rockwell and Jenna Nulty contributed with oustanding play, Sailors Coach Amanda Boyer said.

Newport Harbor travels to Edison High School to close out league and plays host to a quarterfinal game of the Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions on Monday.

Newport Harbor JV Field Hockey hosted Huntington Beach and ended in a 1-1 tie. Huntington Beach scored early but the Sailors were able to tie it up with a goal off a short corner by McKenzie Porteous, passed by Haley Martinez. Goalkeeper Callie Kennedy had 5 saves. Excellent play by Katie Hendrix, Jaclyn Manderson, and Sammy Whitney.

Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph Field Hockey traveled to Marina High School and ended with a 4-0 victory over the Vikings.

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey (5-2) hosted Fountain Valley on Tuesday and defeated the Barons 4-0. Jordan Blanchfield had three goals, with two assists by Alana Rockwell, and Emily Conant scored a goal from the top of the circle off a corner. Goalkeeper Cailynn Smethurst recorded one save. The Sailors travel to Westminster on Friday.

Newport Harbor JV Field Hockey had a 9-0 victory against the Barons.

Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph Field Hockey traveled to Chaminade and won 2-1. Newport scored first with a goal by Bridget Nolan, then Chaminade tied it up 1-1, and Jordan Rausch secured the win with a second goal. Nicole Newman and Maxine Aiello were noted for outstanding play.

Tournament Recaps

It was another busy weekend for Newport Harbor Field Hockey! Thank you to the many many parents who helped out with the logistics of the tournaments for each team!

Newport Harbor Varsity played in the OC Varsity Invitational at Marina High School. The Sailors won their first game against Marina 3-0 with two goals by Jordan Blanchfield and one goal by Emily Conant. The semi-final game was a 1-0 victory over Bonita with the goal by Blanchfield and 4 saves by goalkeeper Cailynn Smethurst. The final game ended in a 0-0 tie after 8 saves by Smethurst and countless shots on goal, but then the Sailors lost in the first round of sudden victory strokes. Congratulations on a Second Place finish!

Newport Harbor JV and Frosh/Soph Field Hockey traveled to La Mesa to compete in the Helix High School Varsity Highlander Cup.

Newport Harbor JV placed first in their pool after three shutout wins.  In their Friday game against Eastlake, Newport won 3-0 with goals by Jessica Stone, Ali Bonds – assisted by Stone and Sammy Whitney, and Mckenzie Porteous – assisted by Rylie Siegfried. Goalkeeper Callie Kennedy recorded seven saves. In the second game against San Marcos, Newport won 2-0 with goals by Haley Martinez and Whitney, and two saves by Kennedy. In their third game, the Sailors defeated Morris 4-0 with goals by Porteous – assisted by Siegfried, Senny Fuller – assisted by Siegfried, and two goals by Siegfried. In the semi-finals against Bishop, Newport lost 0-4 with two saves by Kennedy. Go Newport!

Frosh/Soph coach Taylor Cordeiro reported that Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph gained a great amount of experience at the tournament, learned a lot at a higher level, and played extremely well as a team. Great job girls!
