Newport Harbor 4, Glendora 0
Newport Harbor Girls Varsity Field Hockey continued its winning ways Tuesday, defeating the previously unbeaten Glendora Tartans 4-0 at home.  The Sailors’ strong defense held Glendora to one shot on goal while the Sailors managed eight shots of their own. Stephanie Storch had two goals for the Sailors, including one on a free stroke (penalty shot), and Megan Case scored off an assist from Mary Yeager to finish the first half scoring.  Allie Pantoskey scored midway through the second half redirecting a ball that rebounded off the Tartan goalie.
The Sailors (5-0) begin league action next Tuesday at home against Huntington Beach at 3:15 p.m. at Harper School.  Huntington Beach is the defending Sunset League champion, but has lost to Newport Harbor in the Tournament of Champions finals each of the last two years.
Newport Harbor’s Junior Varsity team came out with another win as well against the Tartans with a 1-0 victory. Junior Annie Pyle scored with an assist from Kirsten Rohan.

VARSITY – Newport Harbor 5, Chaminade 0
Newport Harbor defeated Chaminade in girls’ field hockey Thursday, earning a 5-0 victory.  Newport Harbor (4-0) made 21 shots on goal to none for Chaminade.  “We were able to find the back of the cage today”, coach Amanda Boyer said.  Coach Boyer singled out junior defender Sophie Evans and senior forwards Mary Yeager and Taylor Cordeiro for strong play. The Sailors’ spread the scoring around, with goals from Yeager and fellow seniors Stephanie Storch and Megan Case, and juniors Allie Pantoskey and Emily Browne, off assists by Yeager, Cordeiro, Storch, Cordeiro and Emily Mitchell.
JV – Newport Harbor 5, Chaminade 0
Goals scored by Kirsten Rohan, Hannah Beek, Caroline Johnson, and two by Jill Messersmith.

Newport Harbor Field Hockey was on the road again yesterday at Bonita High School. Both Varsity and JV came up with wins. Varsity won 1-0, see below for more. JV won 3-0 with goals scored by Hannah Beek, Jill Messersmith, and Kirsten Rohan.

LA VERNE — Mary Yeager scored an unassisted goal five minutes into the second half for the Sailors in their nonleague win Tuesday.

Goalie Sydney King had two saves for Newport Harbor (2-0). Beth Barnard, Stephanie Storch and Courtney McIntosh stood out on defense, controlling the midfield.

Newport Harbor will play host to Charminade at Harper School Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Frosh/Soph also won their game 1-0 on the road last Friday at Marina High School. Elizabeth Muenchow scored the only goal. Their next game is next Wednesday, September 22 at Westminster High School.

MOORPARK — Senior forward Mary Yeager scored both goals and senior goalkeeper Meghan Nance made two saves in the nonleague season opener for the Sailors Thursday at Moorpark College. Senior Beth Barnard had one assist and junior center back Courtney McIntosh was singled out for her strong play as well by first-year coach Amanda Boyer. The Tars visit Bonita High on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey scrimmaged Harvard-Westlake of Los Angeles yesterday in a match which ended scoreless. Newport Harbor took eight shots on goal. “Overall. I thought it was a good team effort” said coach Amanda Boyer, noting the strong play of goalkkeeper Sydney King, who recorded four saves.  Newport travels to Moorpark College’s Turf Field to face Louisville High School to begin its regular season. – Kurt Yeager

Newport Harbor Girls’ Junior Varsity Field Hockey scrimmaged Harvard-Westlake as well and ended with a 1-1 tie. Sophomore Sydney Dexter scored the only goal. Newport JV travels to Bonita next Tuesday.
