What a fun day of field hockey in the NHHS stadium on Davidson Field! We are most grateful to Booster President Jeff Chandler for all of his hard work in getting the field ready, as well as Assistant Principal Dave Martinez & Athletic Director Mike Zimmerman for getting us permission to play in the stadium. Special thanks to Anne Layton for putting together the senior flowers and to all of the fans for their support and cheers! Now back to the game recap:

Newport Harbor 5, Edison 0

Newport Harbor girls’ varsity field hockey team hosted Edison at Davidson Field Tuesday, dispatching the Chargers 5-0.  Megan Case scored twice along with Taylor Cordeiro, Stephanie Storch and Sophie Evans, as the Sailors held Edison without a shot on goal until the closing minutes of the game.  Courtney McIntosh and Madeline Storch excelled in the midfield and on defense, according to coach Amanda Boyer.  The Sailors (20-2, 8-1 in league) finish up the regular season Thursday at home (Harper Field) against Fountain Valley.

Newport Harbor junior varsity field hockey defeated Edison 3-0 to secure a first place standing in league. Goals scored by Taury Hlinka, Jill Messersmith, and Hannah Beek.

Newport Harbor 3, Westminster 0

Newport Harbor cruised past Westminster High Monday on three first half goals from Sophie Evans, Stephanie Storch and Taylor Cordeiro.  “We played very well as a team today”, coach Amanda Boyer said.  Newport (19-2, 6-1 in league) hosts Edison at Davidson Field Tuesday at 3:30, and wraps up league play Thursday against Fountain Valley at Harper Field.

Newport Harbor 3, Marina 1

Newport Harbor Varsity fell behind Marina early in Thursday’s Sunset League matchup, but rallied with three goals in the second half to defeat the Vikings, 3-1.  Juniors provided the scoring Thursday, as Madison Wooters scored the tying goal followed by goals from Allie Pantoskey and Emily Browne.  Megan Case and Sophie Evans assisted on the last two goals.

The Sailors (18-2, 5-1 in league) started slow, yielding a rare goal  early in the first half.  “Fortunately, we regained the momentum in the second half,” coach Amanda Boyer said.  The Sailors face Edison at home Tuesday in a 3:15 game at NHHS Davidson Field.

Newport Harbor Junior Varsity beat Marina 7-0. Goals by Annie Pyle (2), Taury Hlinka (2), Kaitlin Shedd, Jill Messersmith, and Kirsten Rohan.

Newport Harbor 5, Westminister 0

Newport Harbor girls’ varsity field hockey defeated Westminster 5-0 Wednesday at Harper School in a Sunset League matchup.  Seniors Taylor Cordeiro and Mary Yeager scored two goals each, while senior Megan Case added a  second half goal.  Emily Mitchell, Sophie Evans, Alex Chandler and Taylor Cordeiro assisted on the goals.  The Sailors (17-2, 4-1 in league) took 16 shots on goal to three for Westminster.

The Sailors travel to Marina High School Thursday for another Sunset League contest.

The Newport Harbor junior varsity field hockey team beat Westminster 3-0 with two goals scored by Jill Messersmith and one by Sydney Dexter. The Frosh/Soph team got some play time with the Westminster JV team for thirty minutes until dark.

Highlander Champs

Sailors Win San Diego Highlander Tournament!

Junior Ally Pantoskey scored the go-ahead goal and senior Stephnaie Storch scored twice as Newport Harbor defeated San Diego Westview High School Saturday, 3-1, to win the Highlander Tournament at Helix High in La Mesa.  The Sailors won four games Friday and Saturday to reach the final, including a defeat of Mission Hills, 1-0, in the semifinal game.

The Sailors scored 20 goals and gave up none leading to the final. But Westview scored first in the final, on a penalty stroke midway through the first half. The Sailors responded with three goals in the second half to secure the win. Senior Sydney King sparkled in goal for the Sailors (16-2, 3-1 in league), with eight saves in the final. This is the Sailors’ second consecutive Highlander Tournament Championship.

Newport Harbor 1, Huntington Beach  0

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey regained a share of the Sunset League lead with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over host Huntington Beach Thursday. Junior Emily Mitchell scored the game winner in the second half on a redirected shot from Stephanie Storch.  The victory marks the Sailors’ second straight win over Huntington Beach.

“It was a great team effort, ” said coach Amanda Boyer.  “The girls played well.  I am thrilled with the level to which the girls have taken Newport Harbor Field Hockey to.”

Goalkeeper Sydney King recorded five saves for the Sailors. Newport Harbor (11-2, 4-1 in league) travels to San Diego Friday for a weekend tournament.

Newport Harbor Junior Varsity ended in a 1-1 tie against Huntington Beach. Junior Annie Pyle scored a goal from the top of the circle during a short corner.

Newport Harbor 3, Fountain Valley 0

Newport Harbor girls’ Varsity field hockey traveled to Fountain Valley Tuesday and defeated the Barons 3-0, on goals by Taylor Cordeiro, Mary Yeager and Alex Chandler.  Sydney King had three saves in goal for the Sailors (10-2, 3-1 in league), while the Harbor offense had 23 shots on goal.  The defensive play of seniors Natalie Swift and Beth Barnard was exceptional, said Coach Amanda Boyer.  The Sailors travel Thursday for a rematch with league rival Huntington Beach High.

Newport Harbor Junior Varsity field hockey beat Fountain Valley 8-0. Four goals were scored by Jill Messersmith, two by Kirsten Rohan, and one by Kaitlin Shedd and Annie Pyle.


Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph field hockey hosted Edison and lost 1-2. Freshman Julia Frei scored the only goal for Newport.
