Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey (14-3-2) beat Fountain Valley on Thursday in Sudden Victory 7 v 7 play. The game ended with a 1-1 tie, goal scored by senior captain Allie Pantoskey. Senior captain Sophie Evans scored the sudden victory goal two minutes into the 7 v 7 overtime. Newport Harbor travels to play Huntington Beach on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

Newport Harbor 5, Westminster 0

NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors had five different goal scorers in the Sunset League game Tuesday at Davidson Field.

Seniors Emily Mitchell, Hannah Beek, Annie Pyle, Kelly Kindgren and Courtney McIntosh scored one goal each with Allie Pantoskey assisting on one. Newport Harbor plays at Fountain Valley on Thursday.

Newport Harbor JV Field Hockey beat Westminster 4-0 with goals scored by Savannah Fausto, Sophie Templin, Natalie Ward and Alex Palmer.

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey beat Marina High 2-0 with goals by junior Jill Messersmith and junior Taury Hlinka with an assist by senior Hannah Beek. Senior Madison Wooters was pointed out for her extra effort on the field. Newport Harbor will host Westminister at Davidson field tomorrow at 3:15 p.m.

Newport Harbor JV Field Hockey defeated Marina 1-0 with the only goal scored by Sophie Templin.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High won in thrilling fashion, scoring a 3-2 win on strokes against Huntington Beach in the title game to win the tournament for the second straight year Saturday at Marina High.

It was 0-0 before the game would be decided on strokes. Junior Kirsten Rohan, senior Alex Chandler and senior captain Courtney McIntosh scored. Senior goalkeeper Andie Ward made three saves.

Seniors Sophie Evans and Nicole Zielenski were named to the all-tournament team. Coach Amanda Boyer pointed out junior Jill Messersmith and senior Emily Mitchell as key players for the day.

Newport came up with a 3-1 win against Marina in the semifinals with goals by Mitchell, Chandler and senior Hannah Beek.

The Sailors beat Edison in the quarterfinals, 2-1, with goals by Mitchell and Messersmith with an assist by Chandler. Newport Harbor had beaten the Chargers, 3-1, at Edison on Friday.

The Sailors play host to Marina on Monday.

Newport Harbor Varsity Field Hockey beat Edison 3-1 at Edison. Goals were scored by Taury Hlinka, Sophie Evans and Hannah Beek with assists by Emily Mitchell and Annie Pyle. Andie Ward had a great game protecting our goal with 6 saves.

Newport Harbor JV Field Hockey fell 0-1. Goalkeeper Cailynn Smethurst defended the goal and had a lot of saves.

The sailors host Marina on Monday at Davidson Field.

Newport Harbor Frosh/Soph Field Hockey traveled to Harvard Westlake on Tuesday and won their game 1-0. Ali Bonds scored the only goal and goalkeeper Erika Nilsson had ten saves. Go Newport!

Newport Harbor Varsity & JV Field Hockey had their home game canceled due to rain, but it has been rescheduled for next Monday, October 10.

OC JV Tournament Finalists

Congratulations to the Newport Harbor JV Field Hockey team for getting second place in the OC JV Field Hockey Invitational today!

It was a day of stroke competitions since all three of Newport’s games ended in 0-0 ties. Newport won its first game against Edison in sudden death strokes with a goal by Kristin Watanabe. Newport then faced Westminster in the second game and won 3-1 in regular stroke competition. Goals were scored by Maryn Call, Kristin Watanabe, and Alex Palmer and goalkeeper Cailynn Smethurst had three saves. The Sailors played Glendora in the championship game where they went into strokes after ending the game scoreless. Glendora won 2-1 in strokes. Newport’s Alex Palmer scored the only stroke for Newport and goalkeeper Cailynn Smethurst had three saves. Coach Kerrie Gates was proud of the team’s performance. Great job Newport!
