Donate Blood

It has been an especially tough summer for one Newport Harbor Field Hockey family. On June 8, an alum parent, Julie Wolfe – mom to Zoie Wolfe (Class of 2010), was diagnosed with Luekemia. Julie is an avid Newport Harbor Field Hockey fan and gave so much to the program. We found out that there is a big need for people to donate blood. Unfortunately we cannot hold a blood drive because in order for the blood donation to go directly to Julie, they must be done at Hoag Hospital. SO we are inviting everyone to donate blood at Hoag.

If you are interested in donating, please call Hoag Blood Donor Services at 949.764.5621 to schedule an appointment. The Blood Donor Center is at 510 Superior Avenue, Suite 130. For a list of frequently asked questions about blood donation, click here. Julie specifically needs O-positive or O-negative blood, but any other blood types will be donated to the blood bank in her name. We appreciate any help with this, so if you know anyone else who would be interested in donating, please forward them this information.

Julie has been through two rounds of chemotherapy and has now returned home to enjoy summer until she begins the next stage of treatment. To stay connected, or to learn more about Julie, click here for her Caring Bridge webpage.

6th Annual Alumni Game

Thanks to all who came out for the Newport Harbor Field Hockey’s 6th Annual Alumni Game! We had a great turn out for the game – both players and fans!

The Boosters made a great BBQ lunch for all and there was a handful of parents who made the entire day possible. Thanks to the Chandlers, Rohans, Nultys, Dave Conant, Bart Evans and Jim Palmer!!

Class of 1998 & Class of 2026

Grads & Home Field

Congratulations to all of the recent Newport Harbor High School graduates. Good job Class of 2011! You will be missed on the field in the fall, but hopefully found on the sidelines visiting and at the Alumni Game (July 30).

In other news, Newport Harbor Field Hockey has something exciting to share. This Fall 2011 season, the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams will host 90% of their home games on Davidson Field at Newport Harbor High School!! A big thank you to the NHHS Administration for making it happen. Go Newport!

Update on Sasha

Newport Harbor Field Hockey Alum and 2010-2011 JV Coach, Sasha Grumman, sent us an update on how she is doing in culinary school. Thanks Sash!

Sasha spent time in New York City earlier this year: “NYC is fun/exhausting…as you can imagine. School is going well. Pretty long days: 9:30 – 3:30 in the kitchen every day and then Italian language class for 2 hours almost every day. An example of a full course that we will do in a day is a salad with pancetta dressing and a poached egg, then potato gnocchi with a sage sauce, and then a roasted rack of lamb and artichokes. Everything is timed and they watch your every move, but it’s fun! Love the adrenaline rush. Italian is also going super well. Knowing Spanish has helped a lot. Overall, I am super happy with the experience and have been learning a lot. We’ve been able  to work with a wide range of ingredients; everything from octopus and cuttlefish to rabbits and quails. We’ve also broken down ducks and filleted all kinds of fish. While it’s fun here, I do miss you all and it’s always so great to hear from the field hockey family!”

Sasha is now in the second part of her program, which is in Italy: “Italy is absolutely amazing. So much more exciting than NYC, which I thought was impossible. The food is amazing, I’m meeting a lot of Italian students and speaking broken Italian and English. The school is beautiful and I have a great apartment! Things are going well!”

Sasha starts her internship next week at a restaurant called Da Caino in Tuscany. Good luck Sasha, keep in touch!

NHFH Alumni for USA!

Newport Harbor Field Hockey Alumni, Dana Owad (’04), went to the USA Women’s National Game vs. Canada on Saturday in Chula Vista. USA beat Canada 2-0 and Dana said that it was a great game to watch. Thanks for representing Newport Harbor Field Hockey Dana! To read more about the game, click here.

Chan at Penn State

A note from Newport Harbor Field Hockey alumni Lauren Chandler on playing club field hockey at Penn State. The varsity team received a good luck from Lauren over speakerphone right before the championship game last Thursday. Great to hear from you Lauren!

“I am playing on the Penn State Field Hockey team for the season of 2010 and I love it! Im not going to lie, it is definitely not the same as Harbor. However, it fits into my schedule perfectly! I get to go to practice, socials, THON canning trips, and so much more. The girls are all so crazy and yet so down to earth. A plus bonus is we get to play on Varsity’s beautiful turf field…no big deal. It is amazing. I love being able to play club because I still get to play field hockey while enjoying college. It was a great decision for me to try out for the team. It gets me involved and keeps me in shape. I love playing and I hope all of those seniors out there are considering applying at the beautiful Penn State, home of Joepa and the Nittany Lion! WE ARE…PENN STATE!!!!”
