Snelgrove Family

It has been a difficult few months for a Newport Harbor Field Hockey alum and her family. Beth Snelgrove (Class of 1999 and Coached Frosh/Soph in 2000) has been courageously fighting an illness. She has demonstrated determination and grit throughout this tough time. The Newport Harbor Field Hockey program stands strong with Beth and her family and our thoughts are with them.

Top 15: Groves & Martinez

On Thursday evening, Newport Harbor Field Hockey seniors Peyton Groves and Haley Martinez were among the top student athletes from Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar, and Sage, honored for their athletic and academic achievements, as well as community involvement, at the 55th Annual Athletic Awards Dinner. Special guest speaker, Brian Goodell, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, spoke about staying focused on the right course to success as well as the commitment to being the best that you can be. Thank you to the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce for hosting such a special event to recognize the student-athletes.

Congratulations to Peyton and Haley for this exciting honor!

NHHS Hall of Fame: NHFH Coach

The 3rd Annual Newport Harbor Hall of Fame Ceremony was held on June 1st in the Robert B. Wentz Theater. Newport Harbor Field Hockey was happy to especially support one of this year’s Faculty inductees, Ellen Caricof. Ellen was the first field hockey coach for the Newport Harbor Field Hockey program in 1973.

Newport Harbor Field Hockey Alum and Current Players with Mrs. Caricof:
Nancy Rohan, Kathy Hancock, Peyton Groves, Jackie Singer, Ellen Caricof, Emily Vaughan, Sarah Sheldon, and Amanda Boyer

Ellen Caricof taught physical education from 1950-1988. She was the first Administrator of the Girls Atheltic Association, which was the girls’ sports league before female students were allowed to compete in CIF. In 1972, Title IX legislation mandated that girls’ sports offer the same opportunities as boys’ sports, and Caricof was instrumental in helping NHHS make the transition to the CIF league and regulations. She established new girls’ teams which opened doors for the next generations of femal athletes, and coached the first Field Hockey team. NHHS honors Ellen Caricof for a lifetime of bringing joy, skill, and determination to young women in the gym and on the field. She inspired her players to commit to self-improvement and to value the team as a whole.
